Leadership of The Scout Association of Nigeria led by The Chief Commissioner; Hon. Dave Awunah on 29th Mach, 2023, honoured a special invitation by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Recall that the United National Population Fund (UNFPA) was formerly known and called;
United Nations Fund for Population Activities (where they got their original acronym from) until 1987 when the name was changed to its present name.
The UNFPA is a UN agency aimed at improving reproductive and maternal health worldwide.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) delivers a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person’s potential is fulfilled.
UNFPA partners with governments, other agencies and civil society to advance its mission, hence this special meeting with the Scout Association of Nigeria for possible Partnership in Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Family Planning, Youth Inclusion, Gender and Gender base Violence (GBV) amongst others.
The structure of the Scout Association is expected to be employed in carrying out this message to the grass root. The Agency also looked into areas of buying into our existing yearly programmes across the states and various zones in the country to achieve their goals. We also had very many other fruitful discussions.
Speaking earlier the Chief Commissioner gave a brief history who we are and what we do. The Arms and Objectives of the Scout Association. Our programmes up-to the international level. Our previous partnership with their sister Agencies of the United Nations and so on and so forth.
He thanked the management staff of UNFPA for this laudable action plan and hope that they kick start the entire plans on time. The Chief Commissioner thereafter extended a special invitation to UNFPA for them to join in the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea to understudy on first hand our activities at the global level.
He added that scouting had taken the global issues of Youth Inclusion and gender sensitivity seriously hence the Association has a Youth Forum every year the recent one held in Ibadan, in Oyo State. On Gender friendliness he said that could be seen by the delegation to their office today in the inclusion of Miss Peculiar Asemota a female on the delegation of just 5 persons. He went further to say it has become a norm in scouting to always include female and youth in our selection process.
