2020 NIGERIA INDEPENDENT MESSAGE FROM Chief Commissioner, The Scout Association of Nigeria

Dear Scouts,

2020 Nigeria Independence Day!

In October 1st 1960.

Nigeria gained her Independence from the Colonial rule of the United Kingdom, and
today 1st October 2020 marks the 60
th anniversary of our independence.
Ahead of Nigeria’s 60th anniversary on October 1, our National Patron President Muhammadu Buhari in
September unveiled the Nigeria@60 logo and theme for the country’s Diamond Jubilee celebration.
President Buhari who disclosed that the word, “TOGETHER,” is the single-minded proposition around
which the entire anniversary celebration would revolve, also unveiled the Diamond Jubilee anniversary
logo during the Federal Executive Council Meeting (FEC) held at the Council Chambers, Aso Villa on
Wednesday, September 16, 2020.
He said: “Celebrating sixty years of independence really calls for pomp and pageantry, but the
global COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced all nations in the world to think and act differently, has
also foisted on us the imperative of a low, covid-19 pandemic low-keyed celebration. Enabling the
engagement of youth in formal political mechanisms does increase the fairness of political processes by
reducing democratic deficits, contributes to better and more sustainable policies, and also has symbolic
importance that can further contribute to restore trust in public institutions, especially among youth.
Moreover, most of the challenges humanity currently faces, such as the COVID-19 outbreak and climate
change require concerted global action and the meaningful engagement and participation of young people
to be addressed effectively. To this, we can proudly confirm Nigeria Scouts have not been found wanting.
I salute and appreciate the endurance, tenacity and patience of all Scouts in Nigeria in view of all
national, scouting, pandemic and personal challenges we all faced at this point in time, most especially
our strong unwavering brotherhood spirit that has helped to keep up with our scouting spirit over the
years. As we keep the spirit glowing, we promised to continue to do our best to take us out of this trying
time with high hopes and expectations for a better tomorrow.

Happy 60th Independence Anniversary and good hunting!

1st October 2020
